WTR (What’s Toby Reading)? provides unsolicited and unsponsored (I don’t get paid) opinions of books I have recently finished.

I picked up Loopers: A Caddy’s Twenty-Five Year Golf Odyssey by John Dunn because I’m a sucker for a good human interest story wrapped around a sports theme. That’s exactly what I got as Dunn documents all aspects of nearly three decades of caddying at the world’s best golf courses.

Dunn’s “golf odyssey” begins when his parents moved near a Connecticut golf club during his child. “Looping” (slang for caddying made famous by the movie “Caddyshack”) became a way for Dunn to play free golf while chumming around with other golf-crazed compadres. All along the journey, padding his pockets with decent amounts of daily cash.

It is clear that Dunn never surmised that looping would be his livelihood – often writing about his father’s disapproval of his Peter Pan existence and vocational choice. Dunn, though, could not get away from caddying and, interestingly, never aspired to do so for a professional on the PGA or European Tour. Dunn loved spending a few seasons embedded in these private clubs – from August National, to Maroon Creek in Aspen, to The Old Course at St. Andrews, Scotland – and moving on to his next caddying adventure.

I was drawn to Dunn’s description of camping during his caddying seasons, then picking up his meager belongings, and traveling as much as he could save during the off-seasons. Along the way, the reader will enjoy vivid descriptions of the world’s great courses, funny anecdotes about celebrity encounters (like caddying for Bill Gates), and the general workings (good and ugly) of a looping operation.
