WTR: The Secret Society of Aunts and Uncles by Jake Gyllenhaal and Greta Caruso (illustrated by Dan Stantat)

During his recent book promotional tour, superstar actor Jake Gyllenhaal said he could not find any book about the relationship he had with his two nieces.

So, what did the Oscar-nominated actor do?

He wrote “The Secret Society of Aunts and Uncles” with his childhood best friend, Greta Caruso.

The book is a crazy ride to an imagination world where aunts and uncles rule as Leo hangs out with his Uncle Mo. My daughter read it aloud to me – the way the story really is meant to be experienced. With illustrations from one of my favorites, Dan Stantat, the imaginary world Uncle Mo and his nephew have entered comes to life.

There is much to love about the book – the fact that Leo bucks traditional boy stereotypes, the flip-flopping of real and alternative realities, one-liner lesson/takeaways, and the way the story paints the picture of the unique relationships relatives have with children close to them.

I loved the book and see it as a great title for any aunt or uncle to give to children in their lives.
