(Spoiler Free) Dad Review: Outlast (Netflix 3/10)

***While early access was granted, all opinions are my own***

When my son told me that his wrestling coach was resigning to compete in a reality show, I laughed. He must be mistaken, right?

It turns out, my son wasn’t lying!

His coach, Nick is one of the sixteen participants in a new show on Netflix (March 10th) called Outlast. Unlike any review I’ve done, this one is suddenly personal. As such, when early access was provided, my kids and I ripped through eight episodes in two days – and loved it.

The show’s log line is emblematic:

In the new eight-episode series, 16 lone-wolves try to outlast the Alaskan wilderness with only one rule: They have to be part of a team to win.

Described by a contestant another way as a “freezing cold Hunger Games without the killing”, Outlast is a mix of survival expertise, exhaustion and hunger induced inter-personal conflict amongst contestants, triumph for a few, and failure for most. The raw elements of the Alaskan countryside – with daily rain, gloom, and sub-freezing temperatures – were another character in this survival story (maybe the most important one).

While the series has a lively cast of characters, each has a unique way of developing allegiances, forming teams, and finding strategies to “Outlast” all others and win $1 million.

I spoke to “Coach” Nick about his time on Outlast here:

All eight episodes will hit Netflix on March 10th – a perfect time to sink into the couch with the family and enjoy the human condition pushed to the limits by the most extreme environment. You will be glad you did (even if you don’t know Coach Nick like we do).
