WTR: Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

WTR (What’s Toby Reading)? provides unsolicited and unsponsored (I don’t get paid) opinions of books I have recently finished.

Normally my local library supplies my “WTR” content. Over the holiday break, though, I splurged on a 30% off sale at Target and bought NYT’s bestselling Greenlights by film A-lister Matthew McConaughey. I’d heard and watched some reviews by other middle-aged parents so I thought I’d spend the cash and give it a try.

If McConaughey’s career tagline is: “alright, alright, alright” from Dazed and Confused, that seems like a solid analysis of what I thought of the book.

The Good

As I read, it was if the translation in my head was done in the familiar, folky, southern drawn that we’ve become used to when we think about McConaughey. Checking aside his dazzling good looks, I’d say an audio book of this one would be entertaining.

Young Matthew’s childhood adventures and family life were lout with nostalgia that I easily connected to – the household turmoil of his parents three divorces and remarriages (yes, they married each other three times), his idolizing of his brother’s toughness in dealing with a gruff and physical father, and the way he navigated within the gifts bestowed upon him (ie: a creative spirt, knack for writing, and Hollywood-good looks).

I found interest in the details of his willingness to try new things, to explore new areas, and to ruggedly persevere when faced with adversity. The story of McConaughey spending a year in rural Australia with a bizarre family whose patriarch perched himself on a throne during family disagreements seemed absolutely on-brand for his peculiar upbringing. We can all connect to a dysfunctional family tale.

The Meh

Much of the Matthew McConaughey I read about after his initial catapult into super-stardom was not as relatable for me. The stories of vivid, wet dreams as an adult that led him to travel to the Amazon, or the contempt he harbored for his mother who craved public spotlight – those stories propelled the movie star far beyond the “I’d like to have a drink with this guy” type of person I’d gravitate toward.

Maybe I harbor a jealous for the free-wheeling, RV’ing, pot-smoking life that McConaughey has earned because of his silver screen prowess? That skepticism could be the reason I met McConaughey’s “greenlight” moments with a bit of “of course the good looking dude gets the girl” sentiment.

So, while I do not regret forking out the $14 for Greenlights, I’d say to wait for the rental and to skip the theater. Because, to twist another infamous Dazed and Confused line, Matthew McConaughey’s Greenlights might get older but his stories will stay the same.
