Three dads:
- A grandfather, suddenly terminally ill.
- A middle-aged father of two with a dead-end job, a sagging marriage, and a weekly therapy session that exacerbates his growing frustrations with the trajectory of his life.
- A son, a young college student trying to figure out what’s next.
Best-selling author Steven Manchester’s latest title, Dad, a Novel, weaves the lives of these three characters together beautifully in a lovely, emotional tale of growing up (or growing older).
I had the opportunity to speak to Manchester about the book:
I’m a middle-aged dad so, of course, I identified with the storyline closely – the struggles of raising children while fostering a career while making time for a fulfilling marriage.
Rest assured, though, the book will appeal to everyone – wives and mothers, sons and daughters – anyone looking for a tender, reflective story about being present. The quick moving, dialogue heavy novel simultaneously walks the reader through the lives of three characters at drastically different points in their lives – not an easy task.
While Dad, a Novel does contain heavy topics (like therapy, depression, aging, illness, and death), the book is not overly gloomy. In fact, I closed the book feeling better for having read it.
Dad, a Novel will be out September 2021 and is available for pre-order here.
