Think your kid is destined to be great at golf?
Tiger Woods first broke 50 at age 3! Yes, 3.
Does your teenager have what it takes to earn a college golf scholarship at one of the top-tier universities that will feed them into a lucrative PGA Tour career?
Phil Mickelson won the NCAA National Title THREE times while at Arizona State University and a PGA Tour event as an amateur.
So, while your kid may be good, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were legends – even before teeing it up in any tournament to make a living.
The list of accolades for Tiger and Phil could go on forever – just ask the author of Tiger & Phil: Golf’s Most Fascinating Rivalry, Bob Harig (of Sports Illustrated, formerly ESPN). Harig boils down the folklore on these two icons of modern golf – on and off the golf course – in his new book scheduled for release in April (2022).
Tiger & Phil is certainly a golf fan’s dream – full of in-depth details of Tiger and Phil’s head-to-head matches, their unsuccessful stint as Ryder Cup teammates, and the duo’s general, personal stoicism for each other. Their rivalry, after all, may not be described well by number of victories (Tiger owns a far superior record), but by their simultaneous greatness and begrudging coexistence.
The book, though, isn’t simply for the golf nut looking to immerse themselves in stempf meters and swing trackers, Tiger & Phil holds the attention of the casual sports fan (like me) by further humanizing these two birdie-making machines with quirky anecdotes told by those close to the pair that have escaped any familiar headlines.
I spoke to Bob Harig about the upcoming release of Tiger & Phil, here:
Tiger & Phil: Golf’s Most Fascinating Rivalry was, for me, as nostalgic as hopeful. Harig is careful to detail the amazing feats of Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson from the past while acknowledging their on-going drive to test the mettle of the new hot-shots on Tour today. As he told me, “no one knows” how they might continue to change the landscape of modern golf for years to come.
So, how good is your kids?
With good odds on your little one NOT becoming the next Tiger or Phil, each of us can still aim to learn from the standard they’ve created.
Hell, right now I’m simply aiming to break 50 on nine holes – like Tiger did when he was nearly forty years my junior.
Bob Harig’s Tiger & Phil: Golf’s Most Fascinating Rivalry released in April 2022.
