I didn’t have to read deeply, before realizing the privileged lens I had after picking up the Los Angeles Lakers star, Carmelo Anthony’s, memoir. After all, I grabbed Where Tomorrows Aren’t Promised: A Memoir of Survival and Hope with the jaded view that I’ve heard this “rags to riches” story before.

But, there was something more to Anthony’s story for me.

First, having played at a world-class level for nearly two decades, I wanted to understand how this man was able to grind, to continue, to persevere through the same sorts of struggles I’d read about in younger stars’ memoirs – like in Giannis or The Storyteller by music icon Dave Grohl. The type of grit in reaching elite levels is one thing, the determination that accompanies prolonged success is special.

Next, I was interested in Carmelo’s upbringing and what I could use as tidbits for raising my children. Sure, the headline told me that Anthony came from poverty, but I wanted to understand what he was seeing as a kid, who was helping him process the world around him, and the impact of his special ability to play basketball on those experiences.

On both accounts, the memoir was a quick, weekend read that left me satisfied.

The picture of Anthony’s struggles – moving from inner city New York to Baltimore, the death of a dear family member, details of Anthony’s hard-working mother – were well crafted and told with an authentic voice. The triumph associated with overcoming his circumstances was celebrated, but not overly so – I appreciated that.

Prior to reading, I already respect Anthony for his on-court prowess. The book, though, helped me understand how Carmelo Anthony might have filled such a reservoir of resolve.
