If you’re traveling on I-10, you’ll probably have to slow down around Mobile, Alabama. The main East/West interstate typically draws to a slower pace through downtown Mobile at the George Wallace Tunnel.
Instead of cursing the traffic, why not stop with the family? My wife and I did just that for a day with our littlest two (ages 8 and 6) and enjoyed so much of this hidden, southern gem.
USS Alabama
Our day began at the USS Alabama, located near downtown and I-10 on the bay. There is so much to see at this huge site. First, the airplane hangar that greets guests is filled with a variety of military vehicles from numerous eras – old and new. Heading outside, the size of the USS Alabama battleship is astounding. We completed two of three possible self-guided tour routes. If you’re crunched for time, our favorite was the tour that took you outside to the parameter of the ship (the yellow route, I think???!!??). Lastly, we explored the USS Drum, a massive submarine where guests can file through a full-sized, fully-preserved underwater war ship.
Insider Tip: Be ready to walk! While all attractions are assessible and within the same greenspace and bay front, you will certainly get A TON of steps in during your visit. Additionally, if you go in the summer months, bring your sunscreen and bottled water – it’s hot on deck.
The Exploreum Museum
In the heart of downtown Mobile, you’ll family will love visiting the Exploreum Science Center. From the hands-on exhibits, to the giant IMAX theater, to the space artifacts, to the exploration of the human anatomy, there is plenty to do for all ages. Even my 8 and 6 year-olds loved the combination of learning and participatory activities available to them at The Exploreum.
The History Museum of Mobile
Our final stop of the day, I thought, would be a quick one. After all, no little kids are going to like a historical museum, right? Wrong!
We spent nearly two hours learning about Mobile at the History Museum – a gorgeously restored mansion in the heart of downtown (very close to The Exploreum).
Mind you, a few of the exhibits were a bit boring for the littles one – those centered on fancy china or room decor. The majority, though, kept my kids’ attention and had them learning all about the rich history of this southern city. We learned about slavery in Mobile, about the industry ushered in by the Gulf of Mexico, the city’s history with Mardi Gras, and we explored a room of massive, ornate doll houses built and donated by a local resident.
If you’re looking to get inside, in downtown, with a few hours to spend, the History Museum would have something for everyone.
Hank Aaron’s Childhood Home
Hammerin’ Hank Aaron’s childhood home has been preserved and relocated to a site adjacent to a local baseball stadium. If you plan to take your family to this free exhibit, call ahead (don’t just Google it). We made the trip to the stadium – about ten minutes from downtown – only to find it closed this particular day.
