Family Movie Review: A Week Away, a Netflix Original

My daughter will watch A Week Away on Netflix after its release on Friday, March 26th. Until then, though, she knows I have access to the film and has asked me to describe it to her.

The Plot

A Week Away is about Will, an orphaned teen in perpetual trouble with the law, relegated to attend a Christian summer camp in lieu of being sent to juvenile detention.

Will (Kevin Quinn) begrudgingly attends Camp Aweegaway with experienced camper and roommate, George (Jahbril Cook), and quickly falls for the daughter of the Camp’s Director, Avery (Bailee Madison). The plot is filled with clean fun, traditional camp competitions, show choir-like musical numbers, a budding teen romance, and a heart-warming ending the family will enjoy.

Family Matters

A Week Away is advertised as the first faith-based musical of its kind. That is certainly true – religious overtures abound throughout the songs, camp activities, and in lessons that characters learn throughout. I am not particularly spiritual, so I will be interested to see my daughter’s take on whether the religious references will make an impact on her. The lessons, no matter your spiritual preference, are pervasive and relatable for parents and kids.

If you are planning to watch with your kids, expect a wholesome experience filled with appropriate scenes for all ages – elementary to high school.
