November Sports Images our Kids Should See

If you often look to sport imagery to teach your kids life lessons, the month of November provided some extraordinary chances.

I took particular note of three with my kids:

#1: First All-Black Officiating crew on Monday Night Football

I had little interest in watching my adopted hometown Tampa Bay Buccaneers host the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football on November 22nd. My suddenly fantasy football crazed son, Yosef, was into it and agreed to sit next to me to keep tabs on Tom Brady’s passing yardage.

Just before kickoff, the camera and commentators brought the officiating crew into focus. Lead commentator, Steve Levy saying, “You are witnessing a moment for the history books.”

Yosef, who is black, perked up a bit, “Dad, did I hear that right?”

He did not wait for his father to respond, continuing, “This is the first all-black ref’ing crew? Like, EVER?!?”

“Yep. That seems crazy that it took so long, right?” I replied, suddenly reflecting on my normally foggy teenager’s reaction.

“That’s cool,” Yosef smiled and retreated to his fantasy stats.

Yes, I thought, that was certainly a cool moment to share.

#2: Alex Morgan’s return to the soccer pitch

Viviana, my 6th grader, loves Alex Morgan. In fact, she recently profiled the USWNT and EPL soccer star for a pre-Thanksgiving Break school project.

After giving birth to a baby girl in May, Morgan made her Tottenham Spurs debut the first weekend in November. Taking the act of child birth and physical/mental exhaustion of raising a newborn aside, the feat of coming back to top-level competition in six months on the sidelines is remarkable.

Vivi, always tuned in to news about Morgan, was equally impressed, saying, “Dad, she is amazing. She can be a mom AND the best player in the world!”

“Of course, honey. I’m sure she’s worked super hard to get there and even harder now that she has a little one at home,” I shot back.

“Cool. I figured that girls either had to be moms or athletes at some point – not both,” Vivi seems relieve, having, I gathered, thought of this before.

Yep, I thought silently, you can do it all.

#3: Vanderbilt’s Sarah Fuller plays in a Power 5 Football Game

After COVID protocols spared no kicker on the Vanderbilt football team in time for Saturday’s game against Missouri, Sarah Fuller was summoned to fill in from her normal spot in the goal box of the woman’s soccer squad.

I made sure my daughters were gathered around the television to see her make history as the first female football player in a Power 5 conference. I always tell my girls that they can compete with anyone. Saturday, Fuller provided an example we could see.

My youngest, Emersyn (6) did not get it – she is tougher than the boys in here class anyway.

Vivi (12) stood relatively unimpressed – commenting that she could probably kick the ball as far (Fuller executed a shorter version of a real kickoff called a squib kick).

Regardless, my girls saw another female make history against a backdrop of male dominance.

I loved taking in Fuller’s feat from my my daughters’ point of view.

Whether you and your family look to sports, or the nightly news (??!!??), or the going’s on around you, I hope that you find something to for your family to covet.

We all need it.
